His lovely and brief paper has created a tsunami of mathematical work and research in the ensuing 156 years. It has ultimately become one of the seminal works in the development of the algebra and calculus of n-dimensional manifolds.

This wasn’t his doctoral thesis. That was on Riemann surfaces done in 1851. This is a lecture he gave to be a lecturer. It was one of 3 he had prepared from which Gauss has to pick one and he picked this one.
